Who we are
AVA Bridge & Lift system is created by a team of world-class engineering, manufacturing & construction specialists
Walker Construction were chosen to represent the AVA Consortium due to its extensive knowledge & experience within the rail industry, project management experience and "can do attitude".
Walker Construction are a multi-disciplinary building and civil engineering contractor.
The company has a proven track record within the construction industry and has over 60 years of experience. It attributes its success to demonstrable experience & expertise; and a strong desire to work collaboratively with its clients, supply chain and employees.
The company operates in three core disciplines; rail & structures, civil engineering, building & refurbishment and has national coverage.
On the AVA project we were the Principal Designer leading the design phase of the project.
We worked closely with the consortium, collating ideas and knowledge from across the design, manufacturing and construction disciplines to develop an innovative structural solution that optimises the value chain to achieve the best project outcomes.
Expedition are an award-winning multi-disciplinary group of engineers, strategists, and designers that work across the built environment to deliver impactful solutions. We have an award-winning bridges portfolio and work on a range infrastructure projects from local developments and masterplans to large scale projects such as HS2.
Informed by a passion for productivity improvement and innovation, we work with major infrastructure clients and construction organisations to improve the performance of their capital programmes and asset portfolios. Our projects also include housing, commercial and educational buildings, and major regeneration schemes across the UK and internationally.
MTC were challenged with building a Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) model which could produce rapidly configurable designs with a high level of quality and automatically report out necessary information to the user.
The MTC develops and proves innovative manufacturing processes and technologies in an agile, low-risk environment, in partnership with industry, academia and other institutions.
Network Rail own, repair and develop the railway infrastructure in England, Scotland and Wales.
That’s 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We manage 20 of the country’s largest stations, while all the rest – over 2,500 – are run by the train operating companies.
Outokumpu supplied the Duplex stainless steel for the AVA Bridge & Lift.
Outokumpu is accelerating the green transition as the global leader in sustainable stainless steel. Our business is based on the circular economy: our products are made from 95% recycled materials, which we then turn into fully recyclable stainless steel. This steel is utilised in various applications across society, including infrastructure, mobility, and household appliances.
We are committed to 1.5°C target to mitigate climate change, and with up to 75% lower carbon footprint than the industry average, we support our customers to reduce their emissions. Together, we are working towards a world that lasts forever.
Our role was to design the AVA bridge & lift system as a kit of parts to fit any station, anywhere. Manufactured offsite and assembled with minimal impact on site it is long-life, flexible, and re-usable.
The architectural design puts passengers first. Walkways are safe and accessible, with good visibility around corners and considered platform sightlines.
Hawkins\Brown is an architecture practice based in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Dublin and Toronto.
Founded 35 years ago and now run as an employee-owned trust, the firm brings a collaborative approach to projects across a range of types and scales in six main sectors: transport & infrastructure, civic, community & culture; education; workplace; healthcare and residential.
ARX has reimagined the passenger lift, developing a new ‘plug and play’ system to solve key challenges of installation, reliability and through-life maintenance.
The AVA Lift is a first-of-a-kind outdoor-rated system, engineered for rapid deployment with a low carbon footprint. A complete AVA Lift module is fully assembled and factory tested before being transported to site. Installing the AVA Lift has minimal impact on rail station access and schedules, thanks to the short and simplified commissioning process.
ARX is part of the Kinetic Solutions Group and solves complex kinetic challenges for the world’s most ambitious architectural projects.
From first-of-a-kind innovations, to large-scale moving structures, ARX has the pedigree to design, build and install iconic kinetic architecture solutions.
Our people combine exceptional engineering capability with a dynamic, customer-centric approach, helping you to push the limits of possibility.
Our role in the AVA consortium has been to bring our knowledge of metalwork, combined with our experience and understanding of bridge building to help bring the AVA bridge to life.
McNealy Brown have helped develop the working model, manufacturing, fabricating and finishing bridge components as well as constructing the full scale prototype at our facility in Sittingbourne.
McNealy Brown are a specialist fabrication company based in Kent.
Founded in 1984 by the current Directors Vaughan McNealy and Roland Brown, the company has grown to become one of the leading fabrication companies within the rail sector.
Specialising in bespoke steelwork projects, McNealy Brown have a reputation for collaborative working and providing innovative solutions to challenging projects.
The future is now
The AVA consortium comprises Network Rail, Expedition Engineering, Hawkins\Brown, McNealy Brown, ARX and Walker Construction who have pooled their talented teams to create the pioneering AVA Bridge & Lift system. The project, part of the TIES Living Lab programme, was co-funded by Innovate UK and Network Rail.
Designed with a focus on modern manufacturing methods and construction, AVA moves towards the principles of ‘Industry 4.0’ digital technology, revolutionising the procurement, manufacture, and installation of railway footbridges and lifts. AVA is faster to deliver and simpler to install compared to standard industry practices, only a single possession is required.
The use of stainless steel for both structure and cladding extends the design life of the footbridge to 120 years, requiring only minor maintenance. This significantly reduces early-stage degradation, minimises disruption to passengers, lowers whole-life carbon footprint, and cuts down overall lifecycle costs.
Created by a world-class engineering, manufacturing and construction team, and designed to be different, the configurable nature of the Bridge & Lift design means that AVA can fit any station, anywhere.
"80% of the UK railway network is made up of small-medium sized stations and they are the starting point for almost a billion journeys... We know that making our stations more accessible encourages the use of our network, and we know that the increased use of our network encourages socio-economic development in communities around our railway stations therefore driving wider regeneration in local communities.
We believe the AVA Bridge & Lift system revolutionises the way that we approach station footbridge and lift design, manufacture and installation. Reducing cost, making it far more environmentally friendly, and reducing construction and installation time we believe will allow station footbridges to be rolled out at a much quicker timescale than they currently are. AVA’s design will enhance the passenger experience at our stations and drive socio economic development in communities throughout the UK ensuring we are considering our people, places, planet and value when delivering our new infrastructure."
